General Description

Taverne (1971) placed Mormyrus niger Günther in genus Brienomyrus Taverne and established Brevimyrus as a monospecific subgenus of Brienomyrus for this species. Bigorne (2003) elevated the subgenus to full generic status. B. niger remains the only species placed in Brevimyrus.
